As a college freshman, I remember being concerned about my future. I was worried that if I followed the Divine Plan for my life (i.e. do what was “right”) I would have to sacrifice my life and all I wanted to be, do and have and instead endure the future that was laid out for me. What if God wanted me to be a nun?! What if I had to serve in some poverty-stricken country like Mother Teresa?! I felt like I was in some sort of cosmic Russian Roulette game, waiting to accept the fate that God assigned to me.
I loved God and wanted to obey “Him” and yet I wasn’t feeling good about waiting for an assignment to be bestowed on me like some pre-ordained destiny. I was worried that what God would think was “best” for me would actually be the last thing I wanted to do, sort of a divine test of my love and loyalty to God. I remember sitting in the church one Sunday morning frightened and confused, worried that to truly serve God, I needed to endure something unpleasant and try to find happiness within a difficult path. My only other choice seemed to be to depart from God’s plan for my life and follow my own heart and longings. Neither seemed ideal.
These thoughts brought me so much anguish through the years. After all, sacrifice by definition is ‘to offer to a deity something precious’ and also ‘the destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else.’ What did I think I had to sacrifice my heart’s deepest longings for? What did I hope to gain by living a life that wasn’t what I would choose? Would I gain God’s love and approval or entry into heaven? Was I seeking the approval of my parents, my community, my church? Something didn’t feel right about that idea. The whole concept felt heavy and sad, totally the opposite of the Love and Peace I knew God was.
Thankfully, my perception of the Divine has changed through the years. I know now that I am not at the mercy of a Supreme Being in the sky who will hand me my lifetime marching orders to which I must simply obey. I am co-creating my life with the Divine in every moment, with every thought I think and every experience I choose. This is very exciting to me. After all we are creators, not puppets of the Divine nor are we living some sort of test to see if we pass as good enough to be loved by our Creator. We are all Divine by nature. As said by French philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” We are not designed to simply follow a plan given to us by a God who knows better than we do what is good for us, but rather we are meant to co-create our life in concert with God and the divine within.
I am co-creating my life with the Divine in every moment, with every thought I think and every experience I choose.
When we are co-creating with the Divine, we are creating from a place of joy, leading us to even more joy. God (or Source, or Supreme Being, or the Universe) is Love and Joy. When we are creating in alignment with the Supreme Being we are creating from that place of love and joy. The Divine does not lead us to places that feel heavy, burdensome or self-sacrificing but to places that bring us joy and a feeling of lightness. That’s how we know we are on the path to our greatest life and our highest good; we feel excitement, exhilaration, lightness and joy. And this life of joy benefits our entire world and all the people in it. When we are vibrating in this high energy place and feeling the joy and love of life, we are bringing more joy and light to the world around us by extension of who we are being.
I have found through meditation, reading, prayer and personal experience that the more joyful I am, the more in tune I am with God and the more this Divine co-creation becomes a natural extension of me. God, the Supreme Being, or whatever you like to call Source energy, is of the highest vibration possible, the highest frequency. As we become more in tune with the frequency of the Divine, we can “hear” the voice of God leading us to our heart’s desire.
We are always being guided by Spirit, however, if we are not tuned in to this frequency, we cannot hear that guidance. When we are not tuned into our Divine frequency we tend to follow the guidance of our mind, which is based only on past experience and is usually leading us from a place of fear, lack and judgement. It’s like tuning a radio dial to receive the frequency of particular station. If we are desiring to listen to 101FM but are tuned into 89FM we will not hear what we are looking for. We are tuned into the wrong frequency. Instead we will receive another message or simply static. Tuning into the frequency of the Divine is actually easier than one might think. We are given an internal guidance system that alerts us to the state of our current vibration. The guidance system I am referring to is our emotions. Our emotions indicate our current vibrational frequency and can actually be measured.
“Emotions have unique vibrations just like colors and physical objects do. These emotional vibrations also go from higher/faster to lower/slower. When you are laughing and having fun, your body’s vibrations are lighter (higher and faster). When you are tired and sick your vibrations are heavier (slower and lower). You know how when you are in love, you feel “energized”, “high”, like you’re “walking on a cloud?” That’s because your emotions are literally adding voltage and power, lightening your body. And when you’re negative and depressed, you feel sluggish, “feeling low,” “heavy”. “I’m down today.” Your emotional vibrations are giving your body a slower, lower vibration. This is not speaking metaphorically. This is scientifically measurable.” (From The Magic of Quantum, http://www.themagicofquantum.com/review.php)
The higher our frequency, the more we are in tune with our divinity and the intuitive guidance that comes from that place. I have found it very helpful to use The Emotional Guidance Scale* as an indication to where I am in relation to my Spirit (see below). I can identify the emotion I am experiencing in each moment and the relative frequency of that emotion in comparison to others. If I am not in a place that feels good (optimism, positive expectation, enthusiasm, passion or joy) I then have a choice to find a thought that will help move me up the scale in the direction of Joy and realign me with the divine guidance within. I also have the choice to keep vibrating at a lower frequency and get lost in the thoughts and stories I create that keep me in the emotions of fear, guilt, anger, blame, or worry. The closer I am to Joy, Appreciation and Love, the more clearly I can hear Divine guidance, usually in the form of my intuition, bringing me closer to my heart’s desire.
When I surrender to the gentle flow of life and allow myself to be led by my heart’s voice, I am aligned with my highest good. The more aligned I am with God and my highest good, the more joy that I feel coming from within. This isn’t a joy that is preceded by an external event or circumstance, but simply the feeling of peace and even excitement that comes from living in alignment with the Divine. That feeling of peace and excitement continues to lead me to life experiences that offer more of the same. Instead of sacrifice, divine guidance feels more like serendipity: “the effect by which one accidentally stumbles upon something truly wonderful, especially while looking for something entirely unrelated.” (www.beautifulwords.com). Often my heart’s desires show up in wonderfully surprising ways that remind me again and again that the most beautiful parts of life’s journey come when we surrender and allow love and joy to direct our steps.
Our Spirit within us and the Spirit of God are aligned. God’s plan and our Spirit’s plan for our life lead us to the same place of love, joy and peace. We are not here to be taught a lesson or to live a life of sacrifice, but instead we are here to remember that we are Divine Creators and have the power to live our life in a way that brings us joy and lights up the world around us. It is only when we are living from the place of love, joy and peace emanating from within that we can truly change the world and bring Heaven to Earth.
